ION Fire Mode Changer / Selection Switch

Update: Posted: 2007-11-05
I have been getting a few E-Mails about the firemode switch, so here is the update. The project on hold for now.
The Paintball arena where I played and tested the firemode changer has closed down and I have not used my ION since then. All of my time goes into WorkOrder TS. I expect WorkOrder TS to go to version 1.0 in a few month and might start working on the firemode changer again.

I just noticed the massive traffic increase on my website due to the interest in the ION Fire Mode Changer. So I have decided to put the fire mode changer back on the front burner, I'm just waiting for my new development computer to arrive. For now, check out the cool paintball upgrades my sponsors have. The boxes on the left and right usually contain some pretty cool paintball accessories for a very good price.

I have received the new boards for the ION Paintball Gun firemode upgrade. Unfortunately I'm busy with WorkOrder TS so it will be a little longer until I get around to release this upgrade for the SmartParts ION. After some unexplained difficulties testing the boards, I discovered that one of the traces was not routed, not connected. It will be another two weeks before I will receive the next and hopefully final prototype batch of PCBs. Expected release date for the final product January/February 2007. Estimated price $20 - $30 shipped.

Project Details
The ION Paintball marker is the best entry level paintball gun currently available on the market.  The marker's electro-pneumatic blow-forward design allows for a consistent and high rate of fire. Unfortunately it is missing an easily accessible fire mode selection switch. The selection switch is most likely missing to save cost and to comply with tournament rules.
So I started the development of a fire mode changer which will upgrade the stock board, fit inside the marker without modifying the the frame and have a disable option to allow tournament play.

I'm planing to release two versions of the Ion Fire Mode Changer, one will have a simple push button to control the current fire mode. The other option will feature a turn switch, as seen in the Demo Video, the later should offer some great opportunities for custom paintball gun manufactures. Imagine having a scenario paintball marker with an "authentic" firing mode selection switch, similar to the selection switches found on machine guns. An example of a fire mode selection switch is displayed on the right, my fire mode changer can work with a selection switch just like it.

Here you can see the current development progress of the fire mode changer for the ION paintball gun. The board is ready and works but it has a minor problem with the silk screen  going over a few connection tabs.
ION Fire Mode Changer Prototype V2

Proto 1 is the first proof of concept board which ended up being WAY too big to fit into the ION paintball marker. Proto 1 is hand soldered with through hole components.
Proto 2 has a machine made double-sided printed circuit board and is hand soldered using surface mount components. This board ended up smaller then necessary :)
