Garmin GPS locked with "No detailed maps found that support routing."

Last Updated: 2009-07-20

My Garmin nüvi 200 started to display "No detailed maps found that support routing. The nuvi cannot be used without them." after I installed the latest 2009 maps from the update DVD.

After a lot of searching I found the solution. Problem is that the unlock key had not been transmitted to the GPS unit for some reason.

To fix this, create a new file with the .unl extension inside the Garmin folder on your GPS and write the unlock code into the file.
I gave mine the same name as the main map image, not sure if this is required but it worked. So I created gmapprom.unl opened it with notepad and wrote my unlock code onto the first line, noting else. Saved the file, restarted my GPS and all is well now.

I hope this post can save somebody else some frustration.

BTW, while searching for a solution to my problem I found another solution which I would like to share.
If your GPS just starts to display the "No detailed maps found that support routing. The nuvi cannot be used without them." and you did not update your maps you should try to reset your GPS.
Do this my pressing down the lower right corner of your screen and turn on your GPS. Keep the corner pressed until you see a Yes/No dialog box asking you if you would like to reset your GPS. My German version says "Wirklich alle Benutzerdaten löschen?"
Answering Yes will reset your GPS and should fix the problem if you did not try to update the map.

I tried all ways mentioned on this website. Except resetting, the other ways did not work for me. After that I tried to use Start=>All Programs=>Garmin=>MapSource. I did load some part of the map to the GPS again. Then it worked out.

but alas it did not work. When I restart the Garmin, I end up going thru the same rigamarole (can't find the maps/won't work; you make it go away and drill down to the maps/map info and the icon is still greyed out. It just beeps. I'm going to return it.

Hello Judy G,

sorry to hear that the GPS fix did not work for you. It worked for me about a year ago but a change in the latest software may prevent it from working now.

You could try and post a message at
http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/default.asp
it is a large community with a lot of knowledgeable people who might know if the latest firmware requires a different fix.

I hope you get your GPS back up and running.
Title: This method still works

I had time to test the above instructions with the latest firmware currently available for my nüvi 200 (version 5.00) and the procedure still works.
I updated my nüvi 200 to the latest City Navigator Europe NT 2010 and received the "No detailed maps found that support routing. The nuvi cannot be used without them." message.

So I created the gmapprom.unl file by right clicking "New" => "Text Document" renamed the file to "gmapprom.unl" and entered the unlock code onto line 1. I did not add any extra characters such as spaces and did not press enter after entering the code. I saved the file in ANSI and disconnected my GPS.

Turned it on at it worked, so if you receive the above message after updating your GPS you can fix it by following the instructions above.

When I switch my Nuvi 200 on it says "No detailed maps found that support routing. The nuvi cannot be used without them". Please send me unlock codes with instructions. I am surprised this is such a big problem and your company has posted no solution to this. There are so many people complaining about the same problem on the internet. I am in a new city and this piece of junk won't work. Please do a call back if you can't tackle this satisfactorily ASAP. Your customer support works only 8am-5pm CST. How can i call in for 2-3 hours while I'm at office?

I've had exactly the same problem with my Nuvi 250 today, thanks to everyone above for helping me to rectify the problem. I logged onto mygarmin, and used the unlock code from my page on there, and what was causing me a major headache has now been sorted.

For some reason Garmin UK wouldn't supply me with any of the information above, and wanted me to send it in for repair, even when I told them that, as a field based engineer, it's vital that I have it for everyday use. I'm not too impressed with the customer service as this is obviousley a common problem that's easilly repairable by someone with an ounce of sense.

Thank you very much! I got the code from the garmin website directly, I followed your simple instructions and eveything is ok, Before hand i would have had to download 3.5GB map update file and perform a full restore

I'd like to say this worked for my streetpilot C510 and was caused by me clicking send to device and interrupting the upload via mapsource.

Running into the same problem, I found out the Garmin\gmapprom.unl was corrupt and windows said to run Chkdsk. I did with no changes so I opened the file Garmin in the device and deleted the "gmapprom.unl" file. Restarted the map update program, which then recognized the unit and started the upload process.
Title: Garmin 200 Problem Error Solved: No Detailed Maps Found that Support Routing. etc...
Posted By: Dennis On: 2012-01-28 01:06
Running: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1) AppleWebKit/535.7 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/16.0.912.77 Safari/535.7
What happend: I uploaded the latest map on a SD-card and deleted the old map from the Garmin 200. Installing the map took a long time(60min) but went oké, until I turned the Garmin on... I got the error screen: "No Detailed Maps Found that Support Routing. The GPS Can Not be Used Without Them".
Next problem was that the PC didn't connect with the Garmin anymore, because the PC always waited with recognise the Garmin, after the pincode was done.
So I had the error massage when starting up the Garmin and no communication between PC en Garmin...what to do..??

Solution: Take your Garmin to a spot where you know the Garmin would be sure to pick up a satellite signal. Just outside your house(for example). I had to wait about 10 seconds when the error screen disappeared and the screen where I had to put the pincode appeared! I could not believe my eyes! What I also did at that moment was holding my finger in the right down corner that whole 10 seconds...maybe that did the trick also...I'm not sure. I hope this will help solving your problem! Happy man!
