Retrieve Windows 2000/XP License Key from a non booting computer

Last Updated: 2011-08-07

This is a nice trick for a computer tech, assume a customer wants you to reload Windows 2000 or XP but they lost their license sticker and the computer is not booting anymore.
You can either sell them a new license or be nice and get the key out of the registry.
Boot the customer's computer with a BartPE CD containing a dos registry editor.
Open the registry and export the key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
Save the key on a USB drive or burn it to a CD.
Now go to your tech computer and backup the registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

Next import the registry key you retrieved from the customers computer into your tech computer's registry and use a program like keyfinder to see the key you just imported.

Write the key down and import your own license key back into the registry.
Now you are ready to install Windows and stick it to Microsoft because their license states that your customer would have to purchase a new license for Windows since he/she can not present proof that they ever owned Windows .... boooo
