Disable Access to File URLs in Internet Explorer (All Windows)

Normally you can use the Internet Explorer address bar to access standard files and folders. This setting disables that functionality and only allows access to Internet URLs.

Open your registry and find or create the key below.

Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value, called "NoFileUrl" and set it according to the value data below.

Exit your registry, you may need to restart or log out of Windows for the change to take effect.

Note: Requires Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher.

Note: Some browser versions may also require the NoRun setting enabled to activate this restriction.

Registry Settings
User Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]

System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]

Value Name: NoFileUrl
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (0 = Enable File URLs, 1 = Disable)
